The O’Brien family purchased and opened a grocery store in Bray, Co Wicklow in 1944. As well as general grocery items, they stocked ports and sherry along with a limited range of wine and beers. In the 1970’s as interest in wines, beers and spirits grew in Ireland, the O’Brien group started to sell a wider range of these products and in 1970 the group bought their second store in Co. Wicklow, 25 years after arriving in Bray. Three years later they took their first venture into Dublin, purchasing the Dun Laoghaire store. In 1979, a decision was made to put in place a new management team 0with a view to expanding and developing the business. The company was rebranded O’Briens Wine Off Licence. The product range was extensively renewed and expanded to encompass the future needs of Irish wine drinkers.

Sanders bought one and modified it into a pressure fryer, which he then used to prepare chicken. The new method reduced production time and retained the quality and great taste of pan fried cooking.
Not long after, Sanders created a soon to be famous recipe, using a list of secret herbs and spices scratched out on the back of a door to his kitchen. Now KFC is the world’s most popular chicken restaurant chain, specialising in the same original recipe along with extra crispy chicken, home-style sides and buttermilk biscuits.
